Becoming an owner of a general practice

Starting a new practice

Last revised: 24 Oct 2019

Location, premises and staff

If you decide to start a new practice, you will need to make decisions about all of the following.

  • Where do you want to set up your business? Close to home, or in another area altogether to avoid encountering patients when you shop locally? Do you want to move to another area (eg from the metropolitan area to a regional or rural area, or vice-versa?)
  • Do you want to work with a particular type of population or demographic?
  • Do you want to be close to other health providers and health facilities, such as hospitals and aged care facilities?
  • Will you buy or rent the premises?
  • Where will your premises be?
  • Can you find suitable premises in your preferred location?
  • Do you want purpose-built premises, or do you want to convert a different kind of building?
  • What staff will you need?
  • Where and how will you find them?
  • What will you do to motivate staff so they stay with you?
