About the RACGP Board
The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is governed by the RACGP Board.
Chair of RACGP Rural, Chair of RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, Chair of RACGP Specific Interests, a GPs in Training representative, and any additional members co-opted by the Board to the extent allowable under the RACGP Constitution.
The RACGP Board comprises:
- Chairs of each state/territory faculty council
- Chair of RACGP Rural
- Chair of RACGP Specific Interests
- Chair of RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health
- Chair of the Finance Audit and Risk Management Committee
- GPs in Training representative
- Any additional Directors co-opted by RACGP Board permitted under the RACGP Constitution.

To perform effectively in their role, RACGP directors are required to assume a range of responsibilities:
- Govern the RACGP on behalf of its members as a company director under the Corporations Act 2001
- Be familiar with and adhere to the RACGP Constitution and relevant faculty regulations and college policies
- As part of the college, the Board determines and works within the strategic and policy direction of the RACGP
- Work with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to oversee the strategic direction of the college as determined by the Board
- Provide advice to the RACGP President, CEO, other faculty council chairs, and RACGP Expert Committees chairs
- As appropriate, actively contribute to the work of RACGP committees, taskforces and working groups, and represent the college on external committees
- Understand and declare any potential conflicts of interest, especially those arising from vested interests
- Contribute positively to the future development and forward view of the college within the changing health environment of the nation
- Contribute to and support the agreed governance principles: mutual trust and respect, leave nothing unspoken; foster a culture of open dissent, express clear and frank analysis of issues and ensure individual accountability whilst working collaboratively with other directors and the CEO
- Attend the RACGP annual national conference, Academic Session, Annual General Meeting and Convocation, and represent the Board at meetings held at the conference as required
- Provide two-way conduit of information between the Board and the college members who are represented by that director
- Offer relevant experiences and perspectives for the benefit of RACGP as a whole
- As appropriate, work closely and/or meet with
- other RACGP faculty chairs, RACGP Expert Committee chairs and other committee chairs, state health ministers and other relevant members of parliament
- key government stakeholders
- non-government stakeholders
- GPs and their staff
- other primary healthcare professionals
- universities (medical schools)
- Regional Training Providers.
As an ideal candidate, you will:
- have significant previous experience and a proven track record as a board director or equivalent
- have successfully completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) – Company Directors Course and/or have a willingness to commit to such training and all Board-related education
- possess excellent written and verbal skills
- possess a sound understanding of the principles of corporate governance (including appropriate training, as above)
- possess demonstrated leadership abilities
- be a Fellow of the RACGP
- possess good interpersonal skills
- demonstrate diplomacy skills
- possess proactive problem solving skills
- possess excellent planning and time management skills
- possess the ability to foster active debate on issues and ensure focused discussion
- possess the ability to reflect on one’s own actions and encourage others to do same for the purposes of improving board processes.
This role requires regular interaction with:
