Registrar support payments
Incentive payments available from 2026.1
Three government incentive payments are available from 2026.1 to support your transition from the hospital sector to GP training, directly addressing previous barriers including lost study leave entitlements and salary concerns.
Study leave incentive: Access up to five days (FTE) per training year for exam preparation and professional development, based on NTCER base rates + 12% super + 10% loading. Study leave must be negotiated in advance with your employer as unpaid leave to be eligible for the incentive, and unused leave doesn't accrue.
Parental leave incentive: Primary carers receive up to 20 weeks (FTE); secondary carers receive up to two weeks, based on NTCER rates + 12% super + 10% loading.
Salary incentive: Receive $5000 (FTE) per month for your six-month semester when commencing your first core general practice training term.
All payments are pro-rated for part-time registrars and are administered by the RACGP on behalf of Services Australia. Registrars are responsible for superannuation and tax. Further information regarding eligibility and other criteria can be accessed via the Department of Health, Disability and Aged Care GP Training incentive payments webpage, and the AGPT Registrar Handbook.
Registrars engaged in community General Practice Terms in the Australian General Practice (AGPT) program in 2024 will receive nationally consistent payments administered by Services Australia from 1 February 2024.
To receive these payments you must:
- be an AGPT enrolled registrar
- Commence in a community general practice placement in any MMM2-7 location
- have a PRODA account setup with your bank details
