MBS rebates

The MBS contains over 5,700 items that attract a patient rebate, although the adequacy of the rebates arguably varies.

By regularly reviewing the services you provide against the services attracting an MBS rebate, you might find some items you were unaware of and be able to adjust your billing accordingly. Similarly, peer reviewing the MBS items used by the GPs in your practice and other practices might reveal opportunities to adjust your billing to benefit your practice and GPs.

Small adjustments to your billing can make a significant impact to your income. If your practice sees 100 patients a day, mistakenly under-billing just one of those patients could result in significant loss of revenue, as shown in the table below.

Incorrect item and amount billed Correct item and amount that could have been billed Difference per consultation Loss of revenue over one 5-day week Loss of revenue over one 48-week year
Level A consultation (Item 3) Level B consultation (Item 23) $20.75 $103.75 $4980.00
$17.45 $38.20
Level B consultation (Item 23) Level C consultation (Item 36) $35.75 $178.75 $8580.00
$38.20 $73.95
