Training location requirements and commitments

There are ten regions across Australia that you can choose to train in on the Australian General Practice Training Program.

When you apply, you’ll be asked to nominate which regions/subregions you’re interested in training in, and which pathway (general or rural pathway).

If you’re successful in being made an offer, you’ll be required to undertake most of your training within your allocated region/subregion as per the Training Program Requirements Policy.

For each training region and pathway, there are specific training location requirements that you’ll need to meet:

  • On the rural pathway, you’ll be required undertake your core vocational training in rural MM 2-7 area/s. In addition, you’ll need to meet any training location commitments for your region/subregion.
  • On the general pathway, you’ll be required to undertake 52 calendar weeks of your core vocational training outside of inner metropolitan areas or in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health training post in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service or other approved Aboriginal Medical Service in an inner metropolitan area. In addition, you’ll need to meet any training location commitments for your region/subregion.
