About the Short-term training in a Medical Specialty Pathway

The Medical Board of Australia’s (MBA) Short-term Training in a Medical Speciality (STTMS) pathway allows international medical graduates (IMGs) or international specialists-in-training to undertake short-term training of up to a maximum of 24 months in a particular medical specialty area in Australia. IMGs on this pathway can apply for limited registration for postgraduate training or supervised practice. Following completion of the STTMS Pathway, IMGs on this pathway return to their country.

The RACGP, as the accredited specialist medical college for general practice, is responsible for assessing applications for short-term training in general practice. The role of the RACGP is to provide advice to the MBA on the suitability of IMG applications for short-term training in general practice.

Apply for a Short-term Training Assessment

If you’re looking to practice in Australia for longer than 24 months, you will need to apply for a different registration pathway. For more information, contact the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).

This pathway does not lead to general or specialist registration in Australia or Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners (FRACGP). For information about becoming a Fellow of the RACGP, please refer to our Fellowship programs for IMGs webpage.

The short-term training in a medical speciality pathway guidelines are available on Ahpra’s webpage.

  1. Read the RACGP Short-term Training in a Medical Specialty Policy
  2. Find a suitable short-term training position with appropriate supervision arrangements in an Australian General Practice
  3. Apply to the AMC for primary source verification of your primary medical degree and specialist qualification (if obtained)
  4. If you do not already have an RACGP ID, you can sign up for free. You will need this so you can access the online application form
  5. You need to apply to have your overseas primary medical degree (and if obtained, specialist qualification) verified for authenticity. This is done using the Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials (EPIC) service provided by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Step-by-step instructions are available on the AMC website

The assessment fee is $990.

When you submit your application, the Education Support team will send you an invoice via email from educationsupport@racgp.org.au.

Your application won’t be assessed until we have received payment in full.

Your application will be reviewed by RACGP staff and then referred for assessment by the RACGP assessors under the RACGP Short-term in a Medical Assessment Policy. You could be asked for more information by the RACGP staff or by the assessors.

Completed applications may take up to eight weeks to be assessed. A completed application is defined by the date at which all information is received, and no further feedback is required. If assessors require further information, this timeline may be extended

You will be advised of the outcome of your application within eight weeks of submission of a completed application. Unmet requests for further information may delay assessment time beyond this period.

The outcome will either be that you are suitable or not suitable for the position. An outcome will also be sent to the Medical Board of Australia (MBA).

Short-term Training Assessment outcomes are valid for 12 calendar months from the date of the outcome letter.

If you believe the outcome has not fully considered any aspect of your application, you may submit a request for reconsideration within 10 business days of receiving your outcome. Reconsiderations are handled under the Dispute, Reconsiderations and Appeals Policy.
