Palliative care is a specialised area of health practice; It is delivered by a team approach involving a wide range of health professionals aiming to improve symptom control and support for patients with terminal illnesses and their families. Importantly it is not about shortening or prolonging life, however due to stigma and misunderstanding opportunities for quality palliative care may be left much later than optimal. GPs need to know what opportunities are available for their patients diagnosed with a terminal illness. GPs can participate in the team management of these patients. GPs wanting to continue involvement in care of their patients with terminal illnesses can participate in educational and placement opportunities via the federal government funded PEPA education programs.
