Assessment Development roles and responsibilities

The RACGP delivers a range of functions which contribute to the establishing and maintaining high standards of knowledge, experience, competency and skills in general practice. This is achieved through the development and delivery of nationally consistent assessment to determine entry to training and educational programs, commencement onto and progress through pathways to Fellowship of the RACGP and attainment of Fellowship.

The work of the Assessment Development team includes the following roles:

  • Pre-employment Structured Clinical Interview (PESCI) case writer and panellist - assessing suitability to work in a particular position in general practice, for International medical graduates (IMGs) applying for limited registration or provisional registration from the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Workplace-Based Assessment (WBA) item writer - low stakes formative assessments during GP training, that inform feedback for ongoing learning towards the competency outcomes at the standard of Fellowship.
  • Fellowship exam (AKT, KFP or CCE) question writer and reviewer - high stakes summative assessments to determine the minimum standard of competence for Fellowship, to set the standard for unsupervised general practice anywhere in Australia
  • CCE examiner - exercise expertise while working alongside peers to assess the knowledge and competency of candidates under test conditions.

To work in medical education for Assessment Development you must be a current Fellow of the RACGP, working in clinical practice, and you’ll need to complete relevant training activities.

Before undertaking any work, you’ll be required to complete a conflict of interest survey, and you must inform us of any change in circumstances which may result in a conflict of interest. This includes:

  • any change in your work arrangements in relation to RACGP Training, RVTS or pre-exam preparation providers
  • any change in the circumstances of a family member where they commence a medical degree in Australia or GP training program
  • a situation in which it is reasonable to conclude that an individual’s or group of individuals’ personal interests directly conflict with the best interests of the Candidate/PESCI Applicant or where individuals’ actions may be influenced by their personal interests rather than education and training outcomes
  • any change in the circumstances of a family member where they are now planning to sit the RACGP Fellowship examinations, Selection examinations or undertake a PESCI in the next 12 months
  • any change in your AHPRA registration status or active/pending AHPRA investigations
