The Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing is reviewing Medicare MRI services, requesting and access pathways. This RACGP response addresses key issues of concern for further review. These include: expanding GP requestable MRI; introducing requestable MRI services by nurse practitioners and physiotherapists; age cut-off limits for certain indications; and restrictions to some indications based on previous x-ray reports. The RACGP supports expanding GP requestable MRI. Limitations of the proposed reforms are highlighted in this response.
