The financial and business sustainability of general practice is a priority for the RACGP. To support our members, this package of self-directed education has been developed for your continuous professional development (CPD).

Activities on this page will help you to explore new ways to optimise your billing strategy and effectively implement a new billing model to improve the financial and business sustainability of your practice.

This package or “CPD solution” offers you practical tools and evidence informed Educational Activities (EA), Reviewing Performance (RP) and Measuring Outcomes (MO) options for your CPD.

There are five activities outlined below that you can complete on your own or with others in your practice.

The first three activities are designed to help evaluate the efficacy of your current billing approach. The final two activities will assist those who are implementing a mixed billing model so that this transition is navigated smoothly.

Ensure you keep adequate records of your activity as you may be audited by the RACGP or Medical Board of Australia (MBA). The MBA requires evidence of your annual CPD activities to be retained for three years. See evidence guide here.

Activity 1: What to consider when choosing your billing model

Hear from GPs and practice owners who have successfully transitioned to a mixed billing model on the key factors that you should take into consideration when deciding to transition to a mixed billing model.

Activity 2: Understand your practice costs and identify current billing arrangements – mini audit

Delve deeper into your practice costs to understand your current billing arrangement. This activity will help you identify your fixed and variable costs, establish your breakeven point and understand how your current billing arrangements can impact your bottom line.

Activity 3: Testing alternative billing arrangements and strategies

Using fictional case studies developed by the RACGP, you will identify possible ways to introduce mixed billing in your practice. You will also identify and test alternative billing arrangements and scenarios

Activity 4:  Setting fees and building your fee list

This activity will help you identify your most billed items, determine the appropriate fees to charge and build a fee list. Using your billing report from your practice software and the MBS online tool, you will create and build your fee list.

Activity 5: Implementing your new mixed billing policy 

Learn new tools and techniques to communicate your new billing policy with your patients and to educate patients on what has changed. This activity will equip you with strategies to manage patients who are unhappy with your new billing policy.
