Introduction to point-of-care ultrasound workshops

Introduction to point-of-care ultrasound workshops

Delivered by experienced rural doctors and sonographers

Point-of-care ultrasound is becoming an increasingly valuable diagnostic tool in rural general practice, especially in areas with limited access to specialist services. With the growing affordability and efficiency of portable ultrasound devices, GPs are increasingly interested in exploring the uses and applications of point-of-care ultrasound in their practice.

This full-day workshop is designed to enhance your understanding of point-of-care ultrasound applications in the diagnostic process. Led by experts in the field, the workshop will explore the diverse uses of point-of-care ultrasound in rural primary care settings. You will be introduced to basic techniques using advanced, high-quality mobile ultrasound equipment provided by our sponsor, GE HealthCare.

To ensure an enriched hands-on experience, the workshop is limited to 30 participants. You will rotate through six ultrasound skill stations:

  1. Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (eFAST)
  2. Deep venous thrombosis
  3. Heart and lung ultrasound
  4. Intravenous line placement and foreign object retrieval
  5. Musculoskeletal soft tissue
  6. First trimester transabdominal obstetric ultrasound

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  1. Apply the Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (eFAST) protocol
  2. Assess the presence of a viable intrauterine pregnancy using first trimester transabdominal obstetric ultrasound
  3. Use ultrasound to safely guide intravenous line placement
  4. Interpret ultrasound images to diagnose cellulitis and abscess
  5. Evaluate the presence of deep vein thrombosis using lower leg compression ultrasound
  6. Conduct a systematic ultrasound assessment of the lungs.

Feedback from participants has been very positive with GPs indicating that the workshop significantly increased their confidence in using ultrasound:

This is amazing and I hope to see more of it. Thank you very much to all concerned, particularly the mix of sonographers and clinicians with primary care focus was really, really good. They were local so now we have more connections in our own workforce!”

‘I believe I have achieved what I set out to achieve from this learning activity. I will now be able to apply the knowledge gained in everyday clinical settings to improve my practice and hopefully improve clinical outcomes’.

‘Excellent course for beginners and advanced.’

‘A day well spent!’

‘I learnt so much in such a short period of time being a complete novice. There was enough time for each participant to practice and also observe others which re-inforced the learning. I was very happy with this course.’

Workshops in other locations will be added to this page once confirmed.
