Chair report

Message from our Chair – Dr Cameron Loy

GP19

GP19 is upon us and this year the conference is in Adelaide from Thursday to Saturday 24–26 October 2019. Have a look at the program. Registration is open and accommodation is still available. Don’t miss out on the year’s main event for GPs.

Upcoming webinars and events

In Victoria, we have a series of webinars available for viewing. We also have a list of upcoming events (below) that include a series of small group networking events from the New Fellows Committee, a Finance 101 webinar and the ongoing Medication Assisted Treatment of Opioid Dependence (MATOD), which is an increasingly useful set of skills and knowledge as we enter an era of SafeScript and an increasing awareness of opioid over-prescribing in our community.

QI&CPD requirements

The end of the 2017–19 Quality Improvement and Continuing Professional Development (QI&CPD) triennium approaches fast and for anyone who still needs to attain the mandatory requirements, now is the time to act. QI&CPD faculty staff are here to help. Maria, Renata and Axel can be contacted on vic.qicpd@racgp.org.au and the contact numbers are on the RACGP website.

RACGP resources

The RACGP is our college and this is a good time to get involved. We have the largest medical college library in Australia (even in the Southern Hemisphere, I think), for our use to ask for information, conduct searches, view  journal articles, and do some ongoing education in our homes, in our own time, such as on gplearning

RACGP Victoria Council

We had some changes in our Council – I’d like to thank Dr Michael Aufgang, Dr Paul Grinzi, Dr Ian Mackay and Dr Billy Stoupas for their time and contribution to the RACGP. Their work and contribution has been significant and added value to all of us. I’d like to also welcome Dr Jennifer Anderson, Dr Amer I Gilani and Dr George Marcus to our Council. There are many ways to be involved at the RACGP; if you have an interest or simply wish to get involved, feel free to contact us.

I hope you are having a great month.

Dealing with depression

Find your niche

On Friday 16 August, approximately 50 interested GPs attended an evening hosted by the RACGP New Fellows Committee. Attendees heard presentations from five passionate and diverse doctors who found their niche in different fields of general practice.

Held at Cargo Hall in South Wharf, each of the speakers presented a short overview of what inspired them and why their chose their field. The presenters provided tips on their training pathways and the mentors who influenced them on their journeys. Following the presentations, each GP hosted roundtable discussions fielding additional questions from the audience.
