Helping you navigate change

As of 2023, continuing professional development (CPD) is changing for not only GPs, but doctors of every specialty across Australia. The Medical Board of Australia (MBA) has outlined new annual CPD requirements, but the RACGP is here to help you navigate the changes as your trusted CPD home.

No one knows CPD for GPs like the RACGP

The new CPD triennium starts next year and with your input, we’ve designed a program that helps you fulfill your requirements and record activities that you’re already doing in your day-to-day life as a GP.

As of 1 January 2023, the new MBA requirements require you to log 50 hours of CPD every year, complete a professional development plan and refresh your skills with one CPR course in the triennium.

The focus of the new changes is on regular performance feedback, collaboration with peers, self-reflection and reviewing patient outcomes – things that you are already doing, and we can help capture. All these activities are aimed at improving practitioner performance and patient care.

As your CPD home, we’re here to guide you through these new requirements and help you get the most out of your professional development with a simple, flexible and accessible CPD program.

A new-look CPD program for GPs

The RACGP has taken the MBA’s requirements and worked them in to a CPD program that recognises the work you do in your everyday practice. Designed for GPs by GPs, it makes it easy for you to record your incidental education to contribute to your hours and further develop your skills.

Each calendar year you will need to record 50 hours of CPD across different activity types. There are some required activity types, but also flexibility in how you make up some of your hours.

NB. You’ll note the change from points in previous years.

Find out what type of activities sit under each activity type.

As a requirement of the Medical Board, you will also need to complete a Professional Development Plan (PDP) each year.

We are creating a simple tool on the myCPD Dashboard to make the process easy for you.

Each triennium, you will need to complete a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course (Providing CPR HLTAID009). While the other tasks are annual, you will have three years to update your skills. This is an RACGP high level requirement, not mandated by the MBA. We will also accept other courses that meet the requirements of HLTAID009 such as BLS and ALS courses which include CPR.
