Accreditation helps ensure a high standard of general practice training across Australia and the provision of high-quality teaching resources, supervision and facilities for registrars. All registrars training to become general practitioners in Australia must train in RACGP-accredited training sites under accredited supervision. This includes registrars training on the AGPT program, the Fellowship Support Program (FSP) and the Remote Vocational Training Scheme (RVTS). How to meet the standards and requirements for general practice training

To help you understand the requirements of general practice training accreditation the RACGP has produced the following documents. These along with the Accreditation Policy and training program handbooks provide the information to ensure the quality and safety of general practice training.

If you are a Specialist GP who is interested in becoming an accredited supervisor for a registrar on the Fellowship Support Program commencing in 2026.2 and already works in an accredited training site

ACRRM and RACGP are working collaboratively to streamline the accreditation process. For our dually accredited training sites, this means the completion of one application form.

Whilst each College will still undertake their own review process and may ask for additional information, ACRRM will accept RACGP’s submission paperwork and visa-versa. This applies to training sites and supervisor accreditation applications across primary care, extended skills and AST/ARST training environments.

AGPT extended skills training site accreditation 

Registrars can extend their skills through a six-month placement in a general practice or other training site eg. hospital or specialty clinic. If you are interested in becoming accredited as an extended skills training site, please see our guide and discuss with your Regional Accreditation Coordinator or email educationaccreditation@racgp.org.au

Report an adverse event or critical incident

Adverse events, critical incidents and near misses are reviewed, managed, and minimised through existing general practice risk management processes. Alternative training environments accreditation

Alternative models of training are developed for use in situations that require a variance from the standards for general practice training. These include remote supervision sites and special training environments, such as practices in hybrid hospital/primary care sites.

Accreditation requirements for remote supervision

Remote supervision provides registrars with the opportunity to work in remote locations where there is limited or no regular on-site supervision. Remote supervision may also be considered when onsite supervision cannot be provided by an accredited supervisor. Learn more about remote supervision accreditation.

How to be dually accredited with ACRRM

ACRRM and RACGP can share accreditation information if your training site – primary care, extended skills or AST/ARST - wishes to be dually accredited with both Colleges to train ACCRM and RACGP registrars.

This collaborative sharing of information means only one accreditation application needs to be completed and submitted to one College, who then shares it with the other. Each College will review each application against their own processes and may request additional information to complete their assessment.


Accreditation of placements for ADF registrars

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) training sites need to be accredited as a special training environment (STE) to meet accreditation standards.

Additional Rural Skills Training (ARST) post accreditation

A component of the Rural Generalist (RG) Fellowship is the completion of a 12 months ARST post. The ARST provides an opportunity for rural GPs to develop additional skills and expertise in a particular area. Accreditation of ARST posts is discipline specific and based on curriculums.
