The transition to college-led training

The Australian Government has announced that the general practice colleges will deliver the AGPT program from 1 February 2023. This profession-led training approach is consistent with other medical specialty colleges which already have responsibility for their training programs.

Our approach to AGPT training will prepare GPs to confidently meet community needs, and address workforce distribution of the profession. It reflects our drive to support general practice and the health care of all Australians.

The RACGP is working hard on transitioning to the new model. We are committed to engaging with stakeholders, learning from their experiences and building on their successes. Existing GP registrars and potential applicants can confidently look forward to the 2023 program.

Our approach is people-centred

Building for success

We will strive to capitalise on the successes of the current RTO model by learning from them. We will employ best practice human resources, use resources efficiently and create a nationally-consistent training program.

Supporting GPs

We want to provide quality training outcomes for doctors who wish to pursue general practice across the nation.

Community needs

We are driven to support our community's health care needs by desigining a fit-for-future training model that focuses on training doctors in areas that need them most.
