Jamil Khalfan

Jamil, a proud product of Harden-Murrumburrah, NSW, was raised in rural health. His parents were the sole practitioners of the medical centre for over four decades. Currently studying at the Rural Medical School in Orange, before retraining, Jamil worked as a Clinical Pharmacist throughout the Central West. Supporting the area in hospitals and community pharmacies, these experiences reinvigorated his passion for rural health. For Jamil, contributing to rural communities goes beyond any single vocation. He believes giving back to rural communities is as much about making cultural impacts as clinical ones. Jamil looks forward to dedicating the remainder of his career to regional areas, embracing the unique opportunities they present.

Currently in my 3rd year of a Doctor of Medicine (MD) at CSU Rural School of Medicine, based out of the Orange Clinical School.

I remain an early career pharmacist, working periodically around the Central West as a Clinical Pharmacist at Orange Health Service and GP Pharmacist at Bloomfield Medical Group.

While being raised in an environment embedded in general practice ignited my passion for medicine. What truly attracts me to general practice is the idea of providing continuity of care for patients and fostering a sense of community within one's practice. Having the ability to deliver ongoing care and build lasting connections with patients sounds like the job for me.

The opportunities to practice as a clinical pharmacist in regional areas were pivotal in solidifying my commitment to rural healthcare. These experiences provided me with a firsthand understanding of the unique healthcare challenges faced by rural communities.

The subsequent opening of the CSU Rural Medical School was a game-changer. It presented the perfect opportunity to study and immerse myself in a familiar regional setting, aligning perfectly with my desire to contribute to the area. It was the perfect route for my journey into medicine, combining my passion for healthcare and my connection to regional communities.

Despite the journey being relatively short thus far, spending valuable time at our local Aboriginal Medical Service in Orange has been a highlight. Witnessing the transformative impact of a multi-disciplinary practice on the local community has been memorable. Similarly, participating in several patient journeys has demonstrated the profound importance of culturally sensitive and community-centric healthcare, especially within Indigenous healthcare.

As a student Rural Council member, my objectives revolve around advocating for the interests of rural healthcare and education. Specific objectives include supporting rural placement pathways for students and amplifying the rural healthcare voice.
