Chair report

Message from the Chair - Prof Charlotte Hespe

I hope everyone’s making the most of the remaining weeks of daylight savings and enjoying the warm evenings outdoors before the cooler nights of autumn begin to make their presence felt.

The Medical Board of Australia’s new CPD requirements took effect in January. As your CPD home, the RACGP has worked hard to provide you with a CPD program that aligns with these new requirements and recognises ‘CPD value’ of activities you do in your practice every day. We’ve also launched an app that allows you to upload and manage your CPD on the go. You can track CPD activities, browse what’s on offer and log your hours. Check out all the resources on the RACGP CPD webpage. I can promise you it’s really easy to use!
Healthcare reform continues to be a consistent theme in the college’s advocacy efforts. The focus of our recent media appearances has been on the low Medicare rebate and decreasing availability of bulk-billing GPs. We’ve aimed to highlight that the rebate belongs to patients and that all Australians need to stand up for increased funding for Medicare.

Meantime, payroll tax is threatening viability of general practices in NSW and the ACT. The RACGP is stepping up advocacy activities, including a focused media campaign ahead of the NSW state election.
NSW Health is expanding pharmacy prescribing pilots (and ACT Health has recently joined the trial), so the RACGP has ramped up messaging around patient safety and appropriateness of care.  Our high-level oversight of the trial aims to 1) make sure the trial design, data collection and analysis of results is done with patient safety and quality care as the end goal; and 2) ensure total transparency around the protocol, training and outcomes at all times.

On a lighter note, the RACGP NSW&ACT Women in General Practice Leadership group celebrated International Women’s Day with NSW Health Secretary Susan Pearce, Executive Director of the NSW Treasury/NSW Productivity Commission Geraldine Carter, and AMA NSW CEO Fiona Davies. Each woman shared her journey to leadership in a panel discussion promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace. If you’re interested in being involved in the Women in General Practice Leadership group, email nswact.faculty@racgp.org.au

RACGP NSW&ACT will host a Fellowship ceremony at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra on 15 April to formally recognise the hard work and achievements of our newest Fellows. This is a highlight of the calendar as we get to share in the joy of achieving this significant milestone with New Fellows, their family and friends.

The Easter long weekend is also just around the corner, bringing an opportunity for many to take some time for some rest and relaxation.

Gambling can have a significant impact on health and wellbeing. It can cause significant financial, health, relationship, education, employment, social and psychological harm. For every person experiencing problems with gambling, it’s estimated that six other people are affected.

In this podcast, GP and addiction specialist Dr Hester Wilson and senior clinical psychologist Dr Kate Fennessy discuss harm and seeking help with Paul, a person with a lived experience of gambling harm.

Consultation: Definition of a general practice for the purpose of accreditation

We’re updating the RACGP’s definition of a general practice to make sure all general practices providing comprehensive, patient-centred, whole-person and continuous care are eligible for accreditation against the Standards for general practices (5th edition) – and we want to hear from you.

Our consultation paper explains the change and our new draft definition. You can provide your feedback by 26 March 2023.

NSW Health update*

New prescriber authority application forms now available

Following the successful implementation of SafeScript NSW, NSW Health is working on improving the efficiency of regulating the supply of Schedule 8 medicines. As part of this work, they’ve released new authority application forms. The new forms are editable PDFs and require less information and supporting documentation from prescribers.

NSW Health is also developing an online system to manage authority applications, which will be available later this year. The new system will be integrated with SafeScript NSW and allow you to submit authority applications online.

If you’d like to provide feedback on the new forms, email MOH-S8Auth@health.nsw.gov.au

Cannabis medicines advice

NSW Health recently updated its medicinal cannabis website to house answers to all frequently asked questions in one location for patients and members of the public. The Cannabis Medicines Help Line ceased operation on 31 December 2022, but consumers can still make specific enquiries via the online enquiry form.

You can continue to contact the John Hunter Hospital Pharmacy Department for expert clinical guidance on prescribing cannabis medicines at HNELHD-JHHPharmacy@health.nsw.gov.au

This service can advise on:
  • the latest evidence for cannabis medicines
  • prescription regulatory requirements
  • tools to monitor a patient’s progress
  • protocols to facilitate prescribing.

Regular routine growth assessments

Regular routine growth assessments can help you support families to make healthy lifestyle changes early and are a great tool for identifying when a child is above a healthy weight. Early identification gives you a chance to talk to parents about making healthy lifestyle changes, offer them free tools and let them know about their child’s eligibility for Go4Fun.

Children aged 7–13 years who are above a healthy weight are eligible for Go4Fun, a 10-week community-based lifestyle program for children and their families. Aboriginal Go4Fun is available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families. Families who can’t attend face-to-face programs can register for Go4Fun Online.
