Online emergency medicine for rural GPs workshop

Online emergency medicine for rural GPs workshop

Designed and facilitated by experienced rural GPs and emergency specialists, the online emergency medicine for rural GPs workshop aims to enhance emergency medicine skills relevant rural and remote settings. Through case scenarios that reflect the unique challenges of living and working in these communities, the workshop provides practical, real-world learning experiences.

Delivered entirely online via Zoom, the workshop runs for four hours and begins with a presentation on key considerations for patient packaging and effective communication with retrieval teams.

Participants are then divided into four groups, each rotating through a different case scenario that highlights common emergencies in rural areas, with discussions guided by a facilitator. The case scenarios are designed to spark in-depth discussions on management and treatment approaches.

The workshop concludes with a brief presentation on debriefing, stress management, and self-care, followed by a reflection quiz that revisits the key topics and case studies covered.

By the end of this workshop, you’ll be able to:

  1. Evaluate critical management considerations for common rural emergency presentations

  2. Formulate plans to effectively package patients for retrieval while considering best practice guidelines, local resources and the unique needs of the patient

  3. Apply the ISOBAR technique in clinical communication related to retrieval

  4. Develop a plan for debriefing that can be applied in own practice following a serious emergency.

  5. Create a plan for own self-care that can be applied following a serious emergency.

Eligible GPs can apply for a one-day emergency medicine grant through the Rural Procedural Grants Program.
