About the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation

The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) is the national peak body representing 146 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) across Australia. NACCHO is a leader in policy development and advocacy as well overseeing the co-design, development and management of a wide range of programs that make a difference in the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

NACCHO’s expansive primary healthcare network spans over 550 locations, delivering over 3.1 million episodes of care annually to 410,000 people, including in some of the most remote regions of the country.

ACCHO’s central focus is to support their local communities to live healthy and happy lives, by delivering holistic and responsive health and medical care that includes, social, emotional, physical and cultural wellbeing of, individuals, families and communities.

As a member of the Coalition of Peaks (a representative body of more than 80 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community controlled peak organisations), a critical aspect of NACCHO’s work is to advocate for implementation of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, which was developed to enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and governments to work together to overcome the inequities experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

NACCHO and the RACGP working together

The RACGP and NACCHO have a strong history of working in partnership and advocating for increased awareness of barriers to quality healthcare faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The RACGP has worked alongside NACCHO, lobbying for increased investment in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and collaborating on key resources for primary healthcare teams to support clinically and culturally safe care, including the NACCHO-RACGP National guide to preventive healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (National Guide).

The partnership between the RACGP and NACCHO was formalised by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in November 2014 with a renewal in 2019.  Our third MoU was signed at NACCHO in February 2025 – a celebration and recognition of the ongoing collaborative and respectful relationship between the two organisations who continue working together to advocate for equity in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, for implementation of the four Priority Reforms under Closing the Gap and for a healthcare system that is free from racism.
