The Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) outlines the GP, other medical specialist and other health practitioner services subsidised by the Australian Government through Medicare. The MBS is managed by the Department of Health and is administered by Services Australia.
The RACGP’s Medicare Benefits Schedule fee summary and Short guide for general practice aim to provide RACGP members with a quick and easy reference to item numbers relevant to general practice.
GPs should be familiar with the full description in the MBS for each item number used.
The short guide – a quick reference guide listing commonly used MBS items in general practice – has been updated with the latest MBS data as of August 2020.
The RACGP is currently working on developing an interactive online tool that will allow users to enter clinic fees for MBS services, calculate patient out-of-pocket contributions and build their own custom lists. As such, the MBS fee summary has not been updated since April 2020. The online tool is expected to be available shortly.
