Tasmanian GP named 2017 General Practice Supervisor of the Year

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is delighted to announce that Dr David Knowles of Hobart, Tasmania, is the recipient of the 2017 General Practice Supervisor of the Year Award.

The award recognises the dedication of a GP who has significantly contributed towards the training and mentoring of general practice registrars, leading by example and inspiring those coming through the system to gain a strong appreciation of the profession.

RACGP President Dr Bastian Seidel presented the award at the RACGP’s annual conference – GP17 – in Sydney. Dr Seidel said Dr Knowles is a deserving recipient for his outstanding commitment to teaching registrars and medical students.

Dr Knowles will also be presented the RACGP’s top accolade, the Rose-Hunt Award, at 4pm today.

The Rose-Hunt Award is presented to an RACGP Fellow or member who has rendered exemplary service in the promotion of the objectives of the RACGP.

Dr Seidel said Dr Knowles’ passion for providing outstanding clinical care to his patients flows through to those he supervises and mentors.

“Underpinning Dr Knowles’ commitment to training and mentorship is a belief in the fundamental importance of clinical excellence in general practice,” Dr Seidel said.

“This caring focus, coupled with outstanding clinical competence, ensures the local community has reliable, safe and dedicated medical services provided by not only Dr Knowles himself, but by everyone he supervises and mentors.”

Dr Knowles completed his GP training in in Western Australia in 2001. He moved to Tasmania in 2005, where he has been practising for the last 12 years. Dr Knowles has held the role of General Practice Supervisor with Eastern Shore Doctors in Hobart since 2012. Here he is the primary supervisor of three first-year registrars and one third-year registrar. Dr Knowles also supervises and mentors medical students.

Dr Knowles held the position of Chair of RACGP Council from 2012–13.
