Hobart’s Dr David Knowles honoured with RACGP’s top accolade

Hobart GP Dr David Knowles is the outstanding recipient of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ (RACGP) most prestigious honour, the Rose-Hunt Award.

Dr Knowles will be presented the award at the RACGP’s annual conference – GP17 – in Sydney at 4pm today.

The Rose-Hunt Award is presented to an RACGP Fellow or member who has rendered exemplary service in the promotion of the objectives of the RACGP.

RACGP President Dr Bastian Seidel said Dr Knowles is an extraordinary GP who is highly respected by his colleagues, not only in Hobart, but throughout Australia.

“Dr Knowles has a positive and long-lasting influence on all those who are fortunate enough to work alongside him,” Dr Seidel said.

“This influence extends from his role as a GP in South Hobart, to his time as Chair of the RACGP Council in 2012–13.

“Two vastly different positions that he has held with compassion, competence and integrity.”

Dr Seidel said Dr Knowles is regarded by his colleagues as a fair and inclusive mentor.

“Dr Knowles goes out of his way to welcome new doctors to the profession and ensure they get the most out of their careers,” Dr Seidel said.

“His commitment to fairness and inclusiveness has meant many members, a significant number of whom are younger members and female members, have become more engaged with the RACGP.

“Dr Knowles is courageous, pragmatic and open. He is the very best of what the RACGP offers.”

Dr Knowles completed his GP training in Western Australia in 2001. He moved to Tasmania in 2005, where he has been practising for the last 12 years. Dr Knowles has held the role of General Practice Supervisor with Eastern Shore Doctors in Hobart since 2012. Here he is the primary supervisor of three first-year registrars and one third-year registrar. Dr Knowles also supervises and mentors medical students.

Dr Knowles will also be presented the 2017 RACGP General Practice Supervisor of the Year Award. The award recognises the dedication of a GP who has significantly contributed towards the training and mentoring of general practice registrars, leading by example and inspiring those coming through the system to gain a strong appreciation of the profession.

GP17 runs from 26–28 October 2017 at the International Conference Centre in Sydney. Visit the GP17 website for more information.
