New factsheet: Using personal mobile devices for clinical photos in general practice

The RACGP has released a new factsheet to support GPs when using personal mobile devices for clinical photos.

Medical photography has long had an important role in the assessment and management of patients in general practice. Benefits of taking clinical images include tracking changes over time, improved patient care and clinical communication through real-time sharing of images and improved teaching and training. With current technology, it is easier than ever to capture and distribute clinical photos of patients.

While clinical photos are a useful tool, care needs to be taken to ensure patient privacy, particularly when photos are taken on a personal mobile device that belongs to the clinician and is used outside of the workplace.

This factsheet outlines:

  • benefits and potential hazards
  • clinical photos and the law
  • practice policies and procedures
  • consent
  • collecting, storing and disseminating photos.

Access the factsheet via the RACGP website.

Submission to the Joint Standing Committee on the NDIS: Inquiry into NDIS planning

The RACGP has provided a submission to the Joint Standing Committee on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) inquiry into NDIS planning.

The submission addresses the role of GPs in supporting patients with disability, which includes providing ongoing care and assisting patients to access the NDIS. The submission also outlines issues with the NDIS planning process, primarily the lack of involvement of GPs in NDIS plan development and subsequent impact on continuity of care.

The RACGP has called for a more enhanced role for GPs during the planning process and once plans have been finalised. This would improve the quality and effectiveness of plans and enable GPs to provide advice regarding the supports needed for the ongoing care of patients.

If you have any questions about the college’s submission, or if you would like to provide any feedback regarding NDIS planning to be considered in future RACGP advocacy, please email healthreform@racgp.org.au
