The RACGP has provided a response to the Medical Board of Australia public consultation on the regulation of medical practitioners who provide cosmetic medical and surgical procedures.

The RACGP response highlights recommendations and comments in relation to:

  • improvements outlined in our previous submission to the Medical Board and Ahpra that were not included in the consultation drafts
  • clarity around data collection requirements as part of the draft registration standard
  • clarity around the definition of reconstructive plastic surgery
  • the role of the GP consult to counsel patients requesting cosmetic surgery and their role in patient referral
  • changes to the draft guidelines for registered medical practitioners who perform cosmetic medical and surgical procedures regarding the importance of an independent medical practitioner to screen patients over 18 years of age for underlying psychological conditions.
