RACGP welcomes extension of WA flu vaccination drive

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has welcomed the extension of Western Australia’s influenza vaccination program and urged people in the state not to miss out.

It comes after more than 500 people have been hospitalised with flu in Western Australia, including over 180 children aged under nine.

The Western Australian Government previously announced an expanded Influenza Program for 2023 with free flu jabs during the month of May and it has now been extended through to June. It includes support for practices to run flu clinics and reimbursement for the 2023 influenza vaccine for people aged 12-64, who aren’t eligible for the free National Immunisation Program (NIP) vaccine.

RACGP WA Chair Dr Ramya Raman welcomed the extension of influenza program and urged Western Australians to roll up their sleeves.

“I’m very pleased our government has extended its flu program for 2023,” she said.

“This year’s strain of influenza is considerably more potent than previous years, and people are ending up in hospital as a result. Confirmed cases have passed 59,000 across Australia with over 5,000 in WA.

“Vaccination is the best protection from influenza, and the extension of the flu program means people have more time to book in and get their jab.

“The RACGP worked closely with the WA government to ensure the expanded flu program included support for general practices to get more jabs in arms, and it has been a great success so far.

“I urge anyone who hasn’t yet booked their flu vaccine from their GP to do so – check the practice website for availability and to book, or call reception.”

The WA Chair said it’s important people get the right vaccine for them and their GP will know what’s best.

“Some people are at higher risk of severe illness and potentially hospitalisation, and they are recommended to get a higher dose vaccine. This includes people aged over 65 years,” she said.

“Speak to your GP, they will know if you have any risk factors which mean you should have a higher dose vaccine.

“People should also consider getting their 2023 COVID-19 booster on the same day – it’s safe and more convenient to get both at the same time.

“The COVID-19 booster dose is available for everyone aged 18 and above, and you can get it six months after your last dose or COVID infection.”
