Dr Geoffrey Robert Gates AM
With
great sadness, the RACGP notes the death of Dr Geoffrey Robert Gates AM,
the 15th President of the college (1988-1990). Dr Gates died at the age
of 83 in Perth on 19 November 2009 after a short illness. Born in
England, Dr Gates qualified in medicine at Manchester University in
1950, before working in the army in Hong Kong, and ten years of general
practice in Lincolnshire. Wanting to use his surgical skills, he decided
to migrate to Kellerberrin in the Western Australian wheat belt. For 19
years he had a varied practice there using his medical, surgical and
obstetric skills. "Womb to tomb" medicine, he called it. He completed
the college exam in 1973, joined the WA Faculty Board, became Faculty
Representative on RACGP Council in 1977 and was Chairman of Council in
1978-81. He gave meritorious service to the WA Faculty in many areas
over the years. In 1998 the Faculty Award for Long and Meritorious
Service was named in his honour. He was awarded an AM in 1989 for
services to medicine. In 2008, Dr Gates was awarded RACGP Life
Fellowship for outstanding and meritorious service to the college. His
work continues to benefit the college and the profession he loved. The
college wishes to pass our sincere condolences to his family and
friends. A more detailed obituary will be posted on our website
shortly. Dr Gates' funeral will be held on Saturday, 28 November at 11am
at the St Georges Cathedral in Perth.
RACGP Examination enrolments now open
Enrolments are currently open and will close on 11 December 2009.
