Payroll tax

Following the dismissal of the Thomas and Naaz case by the NSW Court of Appeal in March 2023, state and territory governments will soon be imposing a new interpretation of payroll tax on the earnings of independent general practitioners (GPs). This may affect you, your family, and your practice.

After many years of Medicare being chronically underfunded, the application of retrospective payroll tax liabilities, occurring in some states may push many general practices to the brink. A recent survey of GPs and practice owners found:

  • Nearly one in five practices say they will be forced to close.

  • 78% of practices will have no option but to raise fees, meaning patients will pay more for every GP consult.

How to get involved

The RACGP knows payroll tax is a concern for many patients. And we’re fighting it. But we need your help!

Grassroots advocacy helps to facilitate change and influence government action. You can support your GP and the RACGP by taking action and making your voices heard.

We have developed practice and patient resources on the impact of payroll tax on the cost of healthcare and the viability of general practice.

What Patients can do:

An exemption from the new interpretation of payroll tax for general practice would make all the difference in keeping practices up and running and not having to charge patients more for each consultation.

The RACGP has designed a letter template for patients to write to their local MP.

*To find your electorate, go to the Australian Electoral Commission’s website, enter your locality, suburb, or postcode.

Download the letter template

We have created a petition for patients to advocate for their practices and tell the government to keep general practices open.
