Deprescribing Benzodiazepines and Z-Drugs: Applying Deprescribing Guidelines in General Practice

Benzodiazepines and Z-drugs (i.e., Zopiclone and Zolpidem) play a valuable role in the short-term management of anxiety and insomnia, but long-term use is associated with dependence, cognitive impairment, falls, and other harms. Despite their risks, deprescribing these medications in general practice can be challenging. In this 60-minute session, we will translate the internationally recognised Maudsley Deprescribing Guidelines into actionable strategies for everyday general practice. Participants will learn the core principles of Maudsley deprescribing, including hyperbolic tapering and personalised reduction strategies, and gain practical skills to identify suitable patients and how to safely initiate tapering.

Environmental health: Addressing patient concerns about per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)

GPs are often the first point of contact for patients worried about potential exposure to environmental hazards and their potential health effects. GPs play a critical role in addressing these concerns, delivering evidence-based care, and guiding appropriate health monitoring. Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are just one example that might prompt a patient to seek guidance from their GP. PFAS are a global concern due to their persistence in the environment and the human body. As public awareness grows, this webinar provides a framework to help GPs respond confidently to PFAS-related concerns, provide appropriate patient management and communicate risk effectively in the primary care setting.
