General Practitioners are key to eliminating hepatitis C as a public health concern by 2028 as most people with hepatitis C can be managed within general practice without needing specialist care
This session will increase GP understanding and confidence in hepatitis C testing and treatment by identifying priority populations, test types required and treatment options.
GPs will be able to speak with an experienced GP and Specialist and learn more about how to effectively manage hepatitis C patients in their clinics.
Learning outcomes
- Increase GP confidence in identifying patients for hepatitis C
- Interpret hepatitis C test results
- Identify when to prescribe direct acting antivirals for hepatitis C treatment and when specialist referral is required

Dr Michael Burke
MBBS, FRACGP, Conjoint Associate Professor, Western Sydney University, Sydney, NSW
Conjoint Associate Professor Michael Burke works in general practice in Blacktown. He is committed to increasing the capacities of general practitioners to deliver quality services in sexual health medicine in primary care settings.
Dr David Prince
Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist
Dr David Prince is a staff specialist gastroenterologist and hepatologist at Liverpool Hospital. David is an investigator on the SEARCH 3 extension project which aims to increase rates of hepatitis B and C testing and treatment. David is a NHMRC scholar who is currently undertaking a PhD on improving the care of patients with chronic liver disease with a focus on early diagnosis and prevention of complications.
