Since the introduction of National Registration on the first of July 2010 the responsibility for registration has been taken over by the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and is administered by a Registration Committee of the Medical Board of Australia in each state. The Registration Committee will require some candidates entering General Practice to successfully complete a Pre-Employment Structured Clinical Interview as a pre-requisite to being considered for conditional registration in their State.

What is a PESCI

The Pre-Employment Structured Clinical Interview is conducted to assess that the candidate has the knowledge, skills and experience to practice safely and effectively in the particular general practice position for which limited registration is sought, using a set of structured questions and scenarios, in an interview situation.

A request for interview can be made by the candidate, by AHPRA or an agency on behalf of the candidate.

A request for an Interview must be made to the state Faculty where the PESCI is to take place and must be accompanied by the candidate's most recent CV and a current PD for the proposed position. Both documents must comply with the pre-determined format and contain all required information. In addition information containing the results of the AMC/ MCQ exam and IELTS test is desirable. A PESCI cannot take place unless all information is provided.

Where possible the interview will be conducted within 4 weeks of receipt of the request if accompanied by the correct documentation and made to the state Faculty.

The cost of the interview is $1500.00 (no GST) this is payable prior to the interview.

The candidate will be responsible for their personal travelling expenses to attend the face-to-face interview; or the cost associated with the arrangement of video conferencing.

Once a request for an interview is received an invoice will be issued for a $500 non-refundable deposit. The deposit will need to be paid within 7 days from the date on the invoice. An interview date will be arranged once the $500 has been received.

Generally an interview is available within 2 – 4 weeks pending the number of interview requests. Please contact the relevant state Faculty to obtain an indication of expected timeframes.

The balance of $1000 is payable within 14 days after notification of the interview date. If the balance of payment is not received within this timeframe the interview will be cancelled and the deposit of $500 will not be refunded.

A candidate can defer their interview date once at no additional cost. A request for deferral must be received at the relevant state Faculty in writing at least 14 days before the scheduled interview date. The request needs to be supported by an explanation of the reason for the deferral.

If a candidate wishes to withdraw from the process after having paid the $1500 a request must be received in writing as soon as possible at the relevant Faculty however not later then 14 days before the interview date. A refund of $1000 will be payable within 21 days of the date of receipt if the request is approved. Requests for withdrawal that are received less then 14 days of the interview date will not be refunded.

Fees are subject to CPI increase.

Panel Structure

The interview panel comprises three medical practitioners (two panelists and a chairperson). In exceptional circumstances the panel may comprise of two members. One of the panel members will be selected based on their knowledge of the candidate's proposed position description or their experience in a similar position.

Structure of interview

A PESCI consists of questions asked by the panel to the candidates to enable the candidate to demonstrate their knowledge and skills as outlined in their CV and in consideration to the proposed position description. The questions will consist of some general questions as well as some case scenarios which may either be of a viva type or role-play. The interviewers will provide guidance on what interaction is expected at each stage of the process. The time allocated for the interview is approximately 90 minutes.

Interviews (face-to-face) are regularly conducted in South Australia, Northern Territory and Tasmania. It is recommended that candidates apply to sit the PESCI in the state/territory in which they are seeking employment.

There is an expectation that candidates who are within Australia will attend the PESCI in person, however, Interviews via video conference may be possible in some circumstances i.e. applicants not able to be in Australia at the time of the interview.

Video conference candidates are required to source a meeting room with video Conferencing facilities and provide the telephone and IP Site Number and co-ordinator's details to RACGP. Usually Universities or large hospitals will have these facilities. Testing of the connection will be coordinated by the RACGP. Applicants are responsible for paying for room hire costs. It is recommended that you ensure that your Video Conferencing provider enables access to IT support at the time of your interview to assist with any unforeseen technical difficulties. The RACGP will not be liable for any expenses associated with any Video Conferencing failure caused by technical faults. Please be advised that our video conferencing provider uses IP to establish a connection to conduct the interview. An IP connection is a free service via the internet. Any alternative connection, such as ISDN, may incur a cost. The cost is to be determined at the time but can be between $800 to $1700 per hour.

Please be advised that the additional cost for the connection other than IP will be at your expense. An invoice would be presented to you once we have received the invoice amount from our provider. Please note that release of the interview results are subject to full payment of accounts.

The candidate must provide reliable invigilation to be available at time of the interview to confirm the candidate's identity and to ensure that the candidate is alone in the video conferencing room and not assisted during the interview.

All Interviews will be audio recorded

Reports from interview

A detailed standardised Report with a recommendation and a summary of the reasoning will be provided for the Registration Committee consideration; detailing

  • A statement as to whether or not the candidate is considered suitable for the position description;
  • Brief reasons for the decision;
  • Supervision requirements and training recommendations.

This report will be forwarded to AHPRA.

Candidate feedback will be derived from this report detailing:

  • A statement as to whether or not the candidate is considered suitable for the position description;
  • Supervision requirements and training recommendations.

This report will be forwarded to the candidate and to any third party for which permission to do so is provided by the candidate.

These reports will be made available to the relevant parties within 5 business days from the date of interview.

  • The candidate applies for a new position in a different practice prior to registration
  • The candidate requests a review of the PESCI outcome due to the availability of additional or new information
  • As requested by AHPRA

The cost of a PESCI review for a new position or where additional or new information is provided attracts a fee of 25% of the full PESCI fee.
