National Faculty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health

Improving the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is one of Australia’s highest health priorities. RACGP is committed to raising awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health needs. As a result, the RACGP National Faculty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health has been formed to help ‘close the gap’. By understanding the cultural context, the faculty hopes to advocate for culturally appropriate health delivery systems that will improve health outcomes for Indigenous Australians. The faculty board will be overseeing a number of education and advocacy initiatives in 2010–2011 and will hold its first annual general meeting in 2011.

Development on an Interpretative Guide for the RACGP Standards for general practices

A new resource

With funding from the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, the RACGP has developed an Interpretive Guide of the RACGP Standards for General Practices 3rd Edition. The guide has been written for people working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services. It aims to guide people who are unfamiliar with the RACGP Standards for general practices through the standards. It aims to help people understand:

  • The point of each criterion
  • The types of things that someone interested in quality would look for
  • The types of documents that are important in maintaining quality in each area of the Standards for general practices. Although this guide can be read separately, it is designed to be read in conjunction with the Standards for general practices.

The Guide is now available for download.

Quality Improvement Workshops

At the invitation of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO), the RACGP has contributed to half day workshops in each state during April and May. These workshops provided an overview of the Interpretive Guide and an introduction to the 4th edition of the RACGP Standards for General Practices.

Cultural Safety Training Scoping Study

The RACGP was contracted by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing to undertake a scoping study of cultural safety training in Australia. A report on the project has recently been submitted to the Department of Health and Ageing and is now available.

Free GP Adverts on RACGP Website
The RACGP National Faculty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health is pleased to announce the extension of the free RACGP web based GP job vacancy service to Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services. Those services seeking to advertise either locum or an ongoing GP vacancies can access this service at www.racgp.org.au/aboriginalhealth/jobs.

We also encourage those GPs who are interested in working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to browse this website to see where there are currently vacancies.

This service is intended to help build bridges between GPs interested in this work and communities in need of GPs. We are keen to work closely with other agencies already engaged in workforce recruitment in expanding the reach of their activities
