The role of the Censor-in-Chief – what’s involved.

The Censor-in-Chief promotes academic excellence at the RACGP by providing training and education governance expertise. As outlined in the RACGP Constitution, the Censor-in-Chief is an ex officio member of the RACGP Board. The Censor-in-Chief will work closely with the Board, the Chief Executive Officer, the Executive team and the Principal Medical Education Advisor.

By virtue of the role, the Censor-in-Chief is:

  • a member of the RACGP Board and is bound by Board member obligations as set out in the RACGP Constitution.
  • a company director subject to the Corporations Act (2001) and the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Governance Standards,
  • chair of the Council of Censors as described in the Council’s terms of reference.
  • a decision maker as required by some RACGP policies.

The Censor-in-Chief provides academic leadership, strategic and policy advice and guidance on educational matters across the organisation. The role ensures that the RACGP adopts an equitable, defensible, nationally consistent and co-ordinated approach to establishing and maintaining standards relating to education, training and assessment; to certification, re-certification and admission issues; and the recognition of qualifications and general practice experience.
