General practice management of adolescents with obesity and overweight

One in four Australians between 5 and 19 years old are living with overweight or obesity. Building on the foundation of our previous webinar on childhood obesity, this practical and GP-centred webinar will focus on adolescents aged 12 years and over. 

It will cover:

  • Dietary interventions
  • Greater autonomy for the young person in addition to family involvement
  • Obesity and eating disorders
  • Pharmacotherapy options
  • Bariatric surgery.

With over 25 years of experience as a healthcare practitioner, both as a GP and accredited practising dietitian, Terri-Lynne has always had a special interest in health conditions associated with excess weight. She believes obesity is a chronic complex medical condition and should be treated as such. Terri-Lynne understands excess body weight has many causes, contributors, influences, impacts, risk factors, complications, and management options. From 2021, Terri-Lynne moved to a full-time focus on obesity and metabolic health, which grants her the time and commitment to further her life-long passion.

Dr Shirley Alexander

Dr Shirley Alexander has practiced as a paediatrician in the UK and Australia for over 20 years. Over the past 10 years, she has been working as Staff Specialist and is the Head of Weight Management Services at the Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW), a multidisciplinary team helping children and young people with obesity and their families develop healthier lifestyle habits. She has published broadly on topics in relation to childhood obesity and medical education and has presented at conferences locally, nationally and internationally. In addition, Shirley has a strong focus in medical education with appointments through the University of Notre Dame, Clinical Lead in Paediatrics for the Sydney Medical School (Auburn) and as Director of Prevocational Education and Training at CHW.
