Issue 3 | May 2012
In the May issue, Good Practice features an exclusive
interview with Emeritus Professor John Murtagh –
Australia’s most successful and respected medical writer, teacher
and general practitioner. Professor Murtagh talks about his life, the
highlights of his brilliant career in medicine and his fondest
memories.
We then turn our eye to Denmark, where a group of doctors has created
the world’s most advanced microsimulator for medical education.
Together with Associate Professor of Paediatrics Marc Berg in the
United States, the Danish team has created a simulated patient that
answers more than 450 questions. This remarkable digital product leads
the way in online medical education for nurses and other medical
professionals.
When it’s time to unwind, our ‘Get Lost’ series
takes you to Morocco, a land of exotic food, diverse nature and

Issue 2 | April 2012
In our April issue, Good Practice talks to Dr Edward
Zuckerberg, father of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, about social
media’s role in healthcare. Dr Zuckerberg, along with social
media
expert and prolific medical blogger Dr Mike Cadogan, discusses the
internal and external marketing opportunities for doctors when they
open
a social media account, but also advises on the importance of
maintaining these as professional pages which are separate from
their
personal
accounts and monitoring levels of anonymity.
We follow the story of a Kurdish refugee who fled Iran with his
family and now has a new life in Australia as a highly respected
academic. Also featured is our new section ‘Get Lost’
– the first part
in a series focusing on work-life balance, encouraging hard working
doctors to embark on an adventure such as volunteering or travelling,
to
‘lose themselves’. In this first issue we visit the
beautiful Elephant
Nature
Park in Northern Thailand, a sanctuary for abused and neglected
elephants.

Issue 1 | March 2012
The new look first issue of Good Practice for 2012 features a 16 page telehealth special, with articles focusing on the latest telehealth initiatives, and where it fits in the healthcare sector today. Detailed advice on setting up and managing video consultations in general practice is also presented, including examples from GPs in rural and remote areas. This issue also looks at some cognitive studies of the human brain. Recent studies have shown that exercising the brain plays a vital role in decreasing the risk of developing dementia, including Alzheimer disease. Engaging in activities that stimulate the brain, as well as physical exercise, is important for better brain function. Other studies look at parts of the brain affected by various degrees of mental training and the results these have on one’s short and long term emotional behaviour.
