Younger onset dementia - dementia presenting in the under 65-year age group

Dementia is often associated with older age, but there are people living with Dementia in the younger age group. Dementia and cognitive impairment in those under 65 often leads to delayed diagnosis, as many other differential diagnoses exist in this age group. The younger onset population also often have additional contextual factors that make the diagnosis and impact more complex, such as working lives, younger children and sometimes dependent parents.
This case study, based on a recent check module via the RACGP, outlines the challenges and aspects of assessment that are relevant to younger onset dementia. The webinar will also highlight the various causes and prevalence of this condition as well as importance of early specialist review.

Dr Steph Daly
Dr Daly is a GP specialist in dementia. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners and completed post-graduate training in Dementia Studies at the University of Bradford (UK). Since moving to Australia she has become an advocate for patients living with dementia and facilitated her practice to becoming one of the first dementia-friendly, and Dementia Australia approved, GP clinics in Australia.
Dr Daly established and coordinates the Dementia Subgroup of RACGP Specific Interests Aged Care.
Dr Karen Savery
Medical educator – Dementia Training Australia
Dr Savery is a Brisbane-based GP who works in clinical practice, residential aged care, and medical education. She is passionate about the education and mentoring of GPs, particularly in the area of aged care and dementia. She works with Dementia Training Australia to increase GP’s confidence in the recognition and management of dementia.
