Responding to child maltreatment in primary health

The Australian Child Maltreatment Study is a landmark Australian study of the prevalence of child maltreatment. The study has generated essential data on how many Australians have experienced each of the five types of child maltreatment (physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, and exposure to domestic violence), and has found that that Australians who experience maltreatment are substantially more likely to have mental health disorders, health risk behaviours and higher health service utilisation.
The effects or ‘symptoms’ of child maltreatment often become the presenting ‘problem’ for treatment and intervention across a range of health services including to GPs and Primary Health.
This webinar will provide an overview of the findings of the Australian Child Maltreatment Study by the Lead Investigator, Professor Ben Mathews. The webinar will also delve into the role of GPs in intervening and supporting their patients and the referral pathways available.

Dr Eleanor Freedman
Medical Forensic Manager, NSW Health Education Centre Against Violence
Dr Ellie Freedman is a Sexual Health Physician with a career long interest in Women’s Health. She has worked extensively in Sexual Health, HIV, Contraception and Sexual Assault both in Australia and in the UK.
Ellie is currently the Manager of the Medical Forensic team at ECAV (the NSW Education Centre against Violence) and a Senior Clinical Advisor to NSW Health PARVAN Branch.
Professor Ben Mathews
Lead Investigator, Australian Child Maltreatment Study | Professor, School of Law, Queensland University of Technology | Adjunct Professor, Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health
Professor Ben Mathews is a Research Professor in the School of Law at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, and Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health. He was a Professorial Fellow to the Royal Commission Into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
Prof Mathews is an internationally renowned researcher on child maltreatment, conducting innovative, transformative research to assist in preventing, detecting, and responding to child abuse and neglect. He is especially recognised for his research into how legal and social systems can best define, prevent, identify, and respond to child sexual abuse.
Dr Jane Brabin
General Practitioner and Educator with the Education Centre Against Violence
Dr Jane Brabin is a General Practitioner with a passion for rural/regional primary care. She has worked as a medical and forensic examiner in sexual assault services for 13 years as part of the medical team providing a crisis response to victims of sexual violence. She collaborates with the Education Centre Against Violence assisting with the delivery of education for doctors and nurses responding to victim-survivors of violence, abuse and neglect.
