I need antibiotics for my cold! Antimicrobial stewardship in primary care

On-demand recorded 9 Nov 2023

It can be wearing to have patients continually request antibiotics for viral conditions - especially when antibiotics are in short supply.

This webinar presents evidence-based approaches for managing antimicrobial stewardship and aims to provide GPs with resources to navigate discussions with patients and understand common conditions that are overprescribed.

Learning outcomes

  1. Build awareness of conditions for which antibiotics are being overprescribed
  2. Assist GPs in understanding patient behaviour which drives antibiotic seeking
  3. Present evidence-based approaches for reducing antibiotic use in primary care

Presenters

Dr Mina Bakhit
Postdoctorate Research Fellow

Mina has a medical background and is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Research in Evidence-Based Practice, Bond University. His key interests include public health, evidence synthesis, shared decision making, antimicrobial stewardship programs and improving quality of reporting. His research focuses on patient-clinician communication and decision making about antibiotic use in primary care. He has a special interest in antibiotic resistance development and decay.

Prof Tammy Hoffman
Professor of Clinical Epidemiology and leads Centre for Evidence-Informed Health Decisions

Professor Hoffmann’s research spans many aspects of evidence-based practice, shared decision making, and minimising waste in research. Her research currently broadly centres around engaging patients and the public in sharing in informed decision-making about their healthcare, improving the quality of research evidence for health interventions (such as through the transparent and accurate reporting of randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews), and making evidence-based practice and evidence implementation easier for clinicians.
