Group A Streptococcus (GAS)

NSW is experiencing an increase in group A Streptococcus(GAS) and invasive group A Streptococcus (iGAS), including among children. 

This webinar aims to update NSW GPs on the current epidemiology of iGAS and includes information about those at higher risk of GAS. It also outlines current best practice for the assessment and management of GAS.

  1. Outline the current epidemiology of invasive GAS in NSW
  2. Assess the current evidence and recommendations of GAS in adults and children
  3. Identify appropriate diagnosis, management, and prevention of GAS in adults and children

Associate Professor Philip Britton is a Paediatric Infectious Diseases physician and Early Career Researcher based at the Children's Hospital at Westmead.

Dr Kerry Chant is a public health physician, Chief Health Officer for New South Wales (NSW) and Deputy Secretary, Population and Public Health, NSW Ministry of Health. Dr Chant has extensive public health experience, having held a range of senior public health positions in NSW since 1991. She has a particular interest in bloodborne virus infections, communicable disease prevention and control, and Indigenous health

Dr Charbel Wehbe is an Infectious Diseases Advanced Trainee and has a Doctor of Medicine (MChD) from ANU and a masters of pharmacy from Sydney University

Dr Rebekah Hoffman

Dr Rebekah Hoffman is a specialist GP and a fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practice. She has special interest in a broad range across Women’s and Children’s Health, Sport Medicine, Surgery and Business Governance. Further to this, she also enjoys teaching, being a Senior Lecturer at the University of Wollongong in Medical Education, and regularly mentors students studying medicine from a number of Universities in NSW.

Dr Christine Selvey
Director, Communicable Diseases Branch, NSW Ministry of Health

Dr Christine Selvey is the Director of the Communicable Diseases Branch and former Director of the COVID Influenza Branch within NSW Health. Christine came from Queensland Health, where she had been the Director of the Queensland Communicable Diseases Branch. Christine is currently the NSW representative of the Communicable Diseases Network Australia.
