Fertility preservation: Elective vs. medical cryopreservation and options for pre-transitioning individuals

In this session GPs will hear from highly-experienced Monash IVF fertility specialists, Dr Gareth Weston (MBBS MPH PhD FRANZCOG CREI) and Dr Tania Widmer (MBChB MMED FCOG FRANZCOG) on fertility preservation across the spectrum – egg freezing, sperm freezing and preservation considerations for trans/gender diverse people.

This session will cover:

  • Elective egg freezing – as a potential option for delayed parenthood.
  • Medical egg and sperm freezing – considerations for oncology-related preservation.
  • Preservation for trans and gender diverse people before the commencement of hormone replacement therapy.

Learning outcomes

  1. Differentiate between elective vs. medical pathways in fertility preservation
  2. Outline the tests required prior to making a referral for a fertility preservation procedure
  3. Describe treatment options for pre-transition and gender diverse patients

Dr Gareth Weston
Fertility Specialist with Monash IVF, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician; Medical Director at Monash IVF Sunshine; Carl Wood Senior Lectureship in Gynaecology at Monash University

Dr Gareth Weston is a highly-experienced fertility specialist and gynaecologist. He completed medicine with honours from Melbourne University in 1996. He transferred to Monash University for training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. In 2003, he completed a PhD in reproductive medicine and molecular biology, spending time performing studies at Cambridge University in England, and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute in Melbourne. In 2002, he completed his Masters in Public Health. Dr Weston has published more than 40 book chapters and journal articles in the field of infertility and reproductive medicine. Currently he holds the prestigious Carl Wood Senior Lectureship in Gynaecology at Monash University and is the Clinical Director of the Sunshine Monash IVF unit and the Gippsland Monash IVF satellite clinic at Sale.
