Guidance on support options available during training

As GPs, we care for people from all walks of life, so it’s vital that our workforce reflects that same diversity.

Doctors with a disability are valued members of our profession, bringing not only clinical expertise but many additional strengths shaped by lived experience to their work. These strengths may include increased adaptability, empathy, resilience, and a deep understanding of the patient experience.

Support services

If you’re a registrar with a disability, we understand that disclosing this to your training team may be difficult, especially if you have had negative experiences in the past.

The RACGP is committed to ensuring you feel respected, valued and supported during your training. Registrar training outcomes are improved when their training teams are aware of a disability so that tailored support can be provided. Please discuss your disability with your medical educator, training coordinator or program officer early, to help us understand your individual needs and identify how we can best support you. Our goal is to ensure you feel confident and well supported while training.

You’re also encouraged to meet with your supervisor to discuss any workplace accommodations that may be appropriate. Depending on your needs, some examples could include:

  • part time training for registrars experiencing fatigue from a physical disability
  • tailored placements for registrars with mobility issues
  • reduced patient numbers and increased support for registrars experiencing mental health issues
  • individualised support to registrars with learning disabilities
  • temporary telehealth arrangements for registrars experiencing acute immunocompromise.

Reach out to your training team and supervisor to discuss your individual needs.
