Helping you thrive in your chosen career

General practice is one of the most varied and fulfilling careers in medicine. It offers flexibility, continuity of care, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact, both during training and throughout your career.

As you progress in your career, many GPs find that diversifying their work, crafting roles to suit their strengths, or pursuing special interests can make general practice more enjoyable and sustainable.

Starting out in general practice is a time of growth, learning, and adjustment. It’s completely normal to feel uncertain or overwhelmed as you settle into your new role. Taking time to reflect can help you reconnect with your values, clarify your direction, and build confidence in your journey.

You might ask yourself:

  • What moments in practice have felt most rewarding or meaningful so far?
  • Which patient groups or clinical areas do I feel most curious or confident about?
  • What challenges am I facing in my current placement or training stage?
  • What kind of GP do I hope to become and what does that look like in everyday practice?
  • Who could I reach out to for mentorship, guidance, or encouragement during training?

General practice supports a wide range of clinical interests, including:

  • dermatology
  • mental health
  • child and adolescent health
  • women’s health
  • aged care
  • addiction medicine
  • sports medicine
  • travel health

and many more.

Choose a placement that suits your lifestyle and values:

  • Community general practice (private, mixed, bulk billing)
  • Rural and remote practice (MM4–MM7)
  • Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs)
  • Special interest clinics
  • Australian Defence Force (ADF) placements

Registrars work with a university to conduct a research project in general practice and teach medical students, while being supported by mentors, supervisors, and the RACGP.

Each year, 20 academic posts are available, including three specialised roles: the AIDA post, the PhD post, and the AJGP Medical Editing post
