Description

The nascent medical profession knew little about blood type and circulation until the 17th century, when the Dutch microscopist Jan Swannerdam observed and described red blood cells. In 1901 Dr Karl Landsteiner identified the first of the blood groups we know today. Forty years later, the Red Cross piloted its well-known Blood Collection Service. This rudimentary but effective blood collection kit (as shown) was made by the Aescule Company in the United Kingdom, in the mid-20th century.
