Family violence in Australia

Family violence is a pervasive issue in Australia, with devastating impacts on individuals and communities. As frontline healthcare providers, GPs play a crucial role in identifying and supporting patients affected by family violence.

Scope of family violence

The role of GPs

As the RACGP’s White Book states:

GPs have a role in prevention, early identification, responding to disclosures of intimate partner abuse, and follow-up and support of patients and their children experiencing the health effects of violence and abuse.’

The RACGP's response

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) offers accredited training to help you build your skills, understanding and confidence in caring for patients and their family members impacted by family violence. This training is free and accredited with RACGP-approved CPD hours.
