Chair report

Message from the Chair - Dr Anita Muñoz

As I prepare to go to the New Fellows Committee wellbeing weekend, I can’t help but ask myself, ‘How are the GPs of Victoria feeling, physically and mentally, now we’re in the third year of the pandemic and have lost count of recent natural disasters?’ It’s been a relentless barrage of challenge, loss, stress, hardship. It’s been a constant fight to have our worth acknowledged and our profession respected for what it’s done and continues to do. There’s been uncertainty, moral injury and serious adulting.

No wonder we’re all tired.

We’ve also had great successes and triumphs, granted. But we’re still pretty tired.

So, what are you doing to care for yourself? Do you know that only 55% of doctors have their own GP? Five percent of us treat ourselves, and another 13% have our doctor partners do the job for us. Tsk-tsk, doctors. That ain’t cool.

Two percent of us smoke, 5% of us use substances. GPs have a 1 in 43 chance of high-risk drinking, and that shoots up to 1 in 33 in rural areas. There’s still a lot of work to do.

Why am I writing this? I don’t want to add doom to the gloom – that’s not my style. I want you to sit down with a cup of tea and ask yourselves the following questions, that’s all:

  • Do you have your own (independent) GP?
  • When was the last time you saw them?
  • Are you concerned about your lifestyle?
  • Is there something simple you can change?
  • When was the last time you laughed out loud, and should you be buying tickets to the Comedy Festival?
  • Do you still engage in your hobbies and totally switch off from doctoring?

If you act on just one question, you’ll have made me a very happy Chair

Dr Anita Muñoz
Chair, Victoria Faculty

It was so exciting to finally hold our Fellowship ceremonies last month at the iconic MCG. Thanks so much to our dignitaries and staff (particularly Lorraine O’Callaghan, Renny Conroy and our National Events Team that stepped in to help make these events successful). For those who couldn’t attend (including me, isolating … again), we live-streamed the event.

Our member events are back – check this newsletter for everything coming up soon.

The Transport Accident Commission has opportunities for RACGP Victoria members to apply for research grants of up to $150,000 for projects that incorporate the principles of value-based healthcare (VBHC) to support patients injured in a transport accident. The grants encourage health providers to learn more about VBHC in practice and help to build evidence for its use. You can find out more on the TAC website and by reading the VBHC Grant Guideline. Applications are open from 19 April to 31 May 2022.

White Book chapter for primary care in Victoria

The RACGP has partnered with Safer Families to announce the release of a new White Book chapter for primary care in Victoria.

This special chapter outlines what primary care providers need to know about Victoria’s Information Sharing Schemes, which aim to:

  • increase the safety of adult and child victim survivors of family violence and hold perpetrators of violence to account
  • promote the wellbeing and safety of children.

For a deeper understanding of how to share information, respond to requests to share information and provide a safety plan, Safer Families also offers a 90-minute elearning module.

Transitioning to college-led training

College-led training is essential to ensuring a strong general practice profession, providing consistent standards, greater flexibility and less administrative burden and filling workforce gaps.

The RACGP training model focuses on local knowledge, relationships and delivery, using a similar approach to what GPs in training are familiar with.
We’re on track for our go-live date of 1 February 2023, and recently we’ve been:

  • talking to regional training organisations about their operating models and training footprints
  • negotiating with the Department of Health about our AGPT Program funding submission
  • planning transition engagement activities
  • finalising our curriculum and syllabus
  • crafting a joint education policy position statement with ACRRM
  • piloting our remote supervision guidelines in Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service and Norfolk Island and building our national GP supervisor professional development program.

2022 Health of the Nation survey

The RACGP’s General Practice: Health of the Nation survey opens today (21 April) and closes on 11 May 2022.

The Health of the Nation report is the most comprehensive annual analysis of Australian general practice and an important advocacy tool for the RACGP. It features survey findings alongside a range of publicly available data, including Medicare and Australian Bureau of Statistics reporting, to show what’s happening on the front line of our healthcare system.

The report tracks trends in primary healthcare, highlighting changes across general practice from both a patient and GP perspective.

Fellows who complete the survey will also be eligible to complete a Health of the Nation CPD accredited activity worth 40 points, which builds on this year's theme of business sustainability. You’ll critically review your billing policy and consider alternative strategies. Visit your myCPD dashboard.

New MBS items for allied health case conferencing

To increase the uptake of multidisciplinary case conferences and improve care coordination and patient outcomes, the Department of Health has introduced new MBS items to allow allied health practitioners to get paid for participating in these conferences.

The case conference must be organised by the medical practitioner and involve at least two other practitioners providing different kinds of care to the patient.

To find out more about the new items, including all relevant requirements, read the fact sheet.
