As I write this, Victoria has been at ‘double doughnuts’ for 10 days – no new cases of COVID-19 and no deaths. It looks like we’re on top of it, which is a good note on which to write my last report before handing over the Chair position to Dr Anita Muñoz.
I’ve been fortunate to meet and get to know a lot of GPs across Victoria. That contact and those stories will be the enduring memory of my four years. For all the colour, lights and movement the sector and our college can generate, away from that is the remarkable GPs that consult, research, study and teach. These GPs are found in hundreds of Victorian clinics, hospitals, universities and training halls.
Speaking of outstanding GPs, last month we held our Annual Members Meeting and handed out the Victorian state awards. You can view the recorded event.
Our GP of the Year is Dr Bernard Shiu, who has not only created a quality clinic in Geelong, but was one of the first GPs here to start talking about the coming pandemic. He was an active advocate for our profession and part of many expert committees contributing to the role of general practice in the response.
Dr Katherine Snow from Bendigo, our GP in Training of the Year, has grabbed onto all the opportunities in the training program and is a star in regional Victoria. Her efforts have enhanced women's health and refugee health, and show the remarkable that is all around us.
Dr Terence Heng, our GP Supervisor of the Year, embodies the important relationship between trainer and learner. Not only his impact on the registrars he has taught, but also his role as a peer mentor and educator ensures the future of our profession.
Our General Practice of the Year, Altona North Medical Group, has risen to prominence this year. Many of us have seen its exterior, as Dr Mukesh Haikerwal provided the trusted, calm, informed voice of frontline general practice throughout the pandemic so often on television and radio. This clinic is much more than that though, with a committed team of doctors, allied health and admin staff who provide comprehensive service to the community. Every GP there defines the highest standards of practice we can all aspire to.
Look out for RACGP Victoria’s ongoing series of education webinars. Dr Sally Cockburn has shown us how to deliver high-quality education in this format on COVID-19, thunderstorm asthma and more. These webinars are engaging and entertaining, informed by Sally's career as a highly skilled GP and medical and health communicator. We’re incredibly lucky to have Sally giving her time to help inform and educate.
The RACGP is a college of its members. Get involved, get engaged. As Anita moves into the Chair role, the faculty will continue to work for members by talking to government and stakeholders, and also talking with all of us. I don't need to wish Anita luck as I know she’ll lead with skill, enthusiasm and capability.
