Tell us about where you practice, and some of the other roles you have?
I am a GP at a wonderful practice in North Melbourne.
Apart from the Victoria State Censor, I am also a GP supervisor at the practice.
What was your journey to become a GP?
General practice has always been on my radar as a medical student. I participated in the John Flynn Rural Scholarship program where I was able to spend time in a rural GP clinic for 2 weeks every year for 4 years in a row. From this I was already impressed by the wonderful scope of practice GPs have. The whole birth–to–death and diversity of medicine was inspiring, but as a student it was quite intimidating as well.
So, I initially went into surgical training but left it early in the piece. I transferred into GP training and have not looked back since.
What initially motivated you to consider joining RACGP Victoria Council?
I have been involved with the RACGP Victoria Council for many years now so trying to look back on the motivation to join is getting hazy. I nominated and was elected on to the council soon after getting my FRACGP. I wanted to be involved in the College, so that made a lot of sense to me. For me it was about being able to contribute to the profession in a different capacity and being able to provide a voice. Since then, I have been part of the Council in different capacities; as a general member, as a Victoria New Fellows Chair and currently as the Victorian Censor.
What advice would you offer to members who are interested in joining RACGP Victoria Council and/or committees?&
Put your hand up. There are many roles on the council and on its committees. Your contribution regardless of how long you are in those positions make the College stronger. We welcome input from all areas of general practice.&
