GP & Psychiatry Liaison Committee

About the Committee

This Committee, in its terms of reference, has a broad remit.

The committee organises educational events and brainstorming workshops, bringing together experts related to important topics such as family violence and refugee health, and more recently in preparation for the recent mental health commissions.

The GP & Psychiatry Liaison Committee explores systems and guidelines that can be developed and recommended to the respective colleges. This collaboration, unique in Australia, allows us, as two separate colleges, to act with some synchronicity so that where possible, not to be at odds when developing policy and advising government.

Currently the committee has a mid-term focus on developing a shared care model with a view to formal recognition and implementation between the colleges and government. The recent mental health royal commission and productivity commission have flagged the importance of community-based mental health care, particularly in the treatment of what it called the ‘missing middle’. Through our discussions, committee members were also able to take advice back to the respective colleges regarding the submissions to both the recent mental health commissions.

The committee is composed of members from each of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) as well as secretariat from both colleges. From time to time, we ask guest speakers to present to us whenever we are considering an issue that needs further expert input. The committee is jointly Chaired by both colleges and each of these Chairs reports back to their respective college at their regular Victorian meetings.

Typically, meetings occur four times per year and have been face-to-face until the recent COVID pandemic necessitated online meetings. The colleges alternate in Chairing and organising each meeting.

We look forward to seeing you at any future events that we may organise and hope that you may take an interest in the committee in future, perhaps even joining us as a member when vacancies arise.
