Introduction and overview
The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) recognises that allergic presentations contribute greatly to the burden of disease and are common presentations in Australian general practice. Allergic diseases may have negative impacts on individuals’ and families’ quality of life, especially for those people with multiple or severe conditions.
General practice has a central role to play in the identification, treatment and management of allergic diseases.
Recognition of Extended Skills for Fellows of the RACGP in Allergy is for GPs who:
- have advanced knowledge and skills in allergic conditions
- understand the impact of allergy disorders on individuals, their families, communities and the health system and the complex interplay of the social determinants of health, environmental risk factors, epigenetics and family history.
- take a health-based approach that considers the needs, wants and risks faced not only by the person they are consulting, but also by their families and communities
- abide by legal obligations and will apply quality improvement organisational skills to ensure the allergy practice is effectively and ethically run and clinical risk is managed
The context in which a GP engages in allergy can vary widely.
