Introduction and overview
The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) recognises that obesity is one of the most important health issues facing Australia and affects the health, wellbeing and productivity of many Australians. Obesity is linked directly and indirectly to many chronic conditions and also causes significant morbidity.
General practice has a central role to play in the prevention and management of obesity.
Recognition of Extended Skills for Fellows of the RACGP in Obesity Management is for GPs who:
- Understand the complex pathophysiology of obesity, along with its broader environmental and societal influences.
- Stay up to date with rapidly evolving evidence-based best practices for managing obesity, including strategies for primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
- Actively contribute to improving care for individuals living with obesity beyond one-on-one treatment. This could include promoting practices that reduce weight stigma and bias, engaging in patient and societal advocacy, or providing education to foster greater awareness and understanding.
The context in which a GP engages in obesity management can vary widely.
