AGPT registrars can commence applying to practices for the 2025.2 placement round through the Training Management System (TMS) from Monday, 28 April. Due to this, we are anticipating higher-than-usual traffic to our TMS. Although this may result in slower load times, we will actively be monitoring TMS performance and making necessary changes to remediate any issues. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding.

RACGP pathway to become a Focussed Psychological Strategies provider

RACGP pathway to become a Focussed Psychological Strategies provider

Being able to offer Focussed Psychological Strategies (FPS) allows your patients to get psychological interventions when access to psychologists and psychiatrists isn’t possible, particularly in rural and remote settings.

As a registered provider of FPS, you can offer your patients many benefits:

  • Patients receive cost-effective psychological interventions.
  • FPS can be an effective form of treatment for people with depression and anxiety.
  • You can provide psychological therapies if there’s a shortage or lack of access to psychologists or psychiatrists.

The RACGP offers an online training pathway to become a GP provider of FPS while remaining in your practice and your community.

Level 1

Mental health skills training

Before you can complete FPS skills training to become a registered GP provider of FPS, you must complete a prerequisite Mental Health Skills Training (MHST) course. Completing MHST will increase your knowledge and skills in engaging with patients with mental illness and allow you to access MBS items 2715 and 2717.

RACGP members can complete MHST through the gplearning platform at no cost.

There are two modules for you to self-enrol in and complete:

Level 2

Focussed Psychological Strategies Skills Training (FPS ST)

Once you’ve completed MHST, you can complete FPS Skills Training (FPS ST) to gain skills in providing FPS to treat common mental conditions.

Our flexible, innovative training package uses a combination of technology, peer-learning groups and locally available resources to provide you with FPS skills and access to MBS items 2721, 2723, 2725 and 2727. GPs can earn 6 EA, 6 MO and 14 RP CPD hours.

The General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration (GPMHSC) is currently offering GPs a training subsidy that covers part of the cost of completing accredited FPS ST. Eligible GPs may be reimbursed $600 once they complete the requirements for FPS ST and register as GP providers of FPS with Services Australia (Medicare). For more information on the subsidy please visit the GPMHSC website.

CPD

FPS CPD case-based discussions

To enjoy continued recognition as a registered GP provider of FPS, you must complete an FPS CPD training course every triennium following the triennium in which you completed FPS ST.

Our FPS CPD package supports GPs who are already FPS providers to implement FPS with patients, evaluate their practice and further develop their skills. GPs can earn nine reviewing performance CPD hours.

The General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration (GPMHSC) has received funding to assist GPs in completing their required FPS CPD.

Available now, GPs can apply to receive a $200 reimbursement after completing accredited FPS CPD activities and maintaining their FPS registration. GPs can find more information about eligibility on the GPMHSC website here.
